The adventure continues....on tumblr!

Unfortunately due to my insane schedule, I've decided it's best to discontinue this blog. I can't devote the time I feel is necessary for both timely and thoughtful posts. But that's not to say the past three years have gone to waste! In fact, I still remember the night I created this very blog. It was near the end of my first semester at NYU, I was "studying" in the library (for the first and last time) and decided to finally make a blog. It was trendy—how could I resist?! I've gone from being a shy, soft spoken freshman, with a strong interest in fashion and beyond jealous of my peers interning at TeenVogue to a more confident (and stylish?) senior, ready to graduate and conquer the fashion pr world—and I'm blonde! Looking back, I didn't have anything close to the typical college experience, but I'm not your typical girl! And that's exactly what I want.

However, please do follow on tumblrtwitterpinterest and instagram!

post-sandy

After Sandy, everything has been a blur. Even though we only missed one week, it  felt like so much more. This was extremely evident in many of my classes. Most of my classes just adjusted and condensed topics, but my senior media seminar was....painful. We basically had 1.5 weeks to write a 15-20 page research paper. Due to the scheduling (fall break, sandy, he cancelled class, etc.) and the fact that it is a once a week class, we lost almost one month of class. Normally I wouldn't have minded because the class is a bit dry, but then we had no time to write the paper, which was not at all ideal. I had to take off extra days from my internship to complete the paper ( I think at this point I've missed three weeks of my internship....). I finished the paper in a timely manner. And that was my biggest thing of the semester, so I think it'll be a nice coast for the last three weeks. eek.
One class I didn't think I would like as much as I do is my TV class. It's a pretty basic introduction to the industry, but the final presentation/project is structured as a game. Basically, the class is divided into writer, producers and network execs. The writers come up with show ideas, pitch them to the producers, the producers team up with a writing team, pitch the pilot ideas to the networks, and then they pick up a show and present it to the class. We are now at the last stage of the game. The network execs just chose their shows, so now we have two week to further develop the idea, and pitch it to the class, and a panel of judges from the industry. My team is Bravo, and I am actually very excited about the show we picked up. I think it has a lot of refining, but I am genuinely interested in the show, and I feel that my knowledge of fashion will be a huge asset to our team.
As far as next semester (my last semester!!) is concerned, I think it might actually be challenging, which is somewhat unfortunate. I'll be taking 5 classes/18 credits plus 3 days of interning and 2 days of my weekend job. And, because I'm an idiot, I put off some of the liberal arts requirements so I'll be in an introductory class with all freshmen.  I don't really mind the freshmen (yet), but I do mind having recitations. ick. The silver lining of my spring classes is that I'll be taking fashion and power! It's literally the only fashion related class in my major (one that is full of fashion girls), but it is notoriously the most difficult class, a fact my advisor told us during freshmen orientation. After I realized freshmen year that I would always have the worst registration times, I kind of ruled out my fashion and power dreams. That is until I saw my current social media professor will be teaching it next semester. I absolutely had to take it. For me, it's just an elective but I wish I had known it counts for the fields of study.....that would have been useful to know. It also would have been useful to have someone tell me freshmen and sophomore year to finish the liberal arts requirements ASAP. Taking those classes as an upperclassman is absolute torture. So, please learn from my mistakes!
Like I said last post, I'm sadly at my photo limit so there will be no photos until I figure something out. But check out my twitter because I post lots of pics and links there! And I tweet a lot.

#sandy2012 and the nor'easter

I have been meaning to post some new stuff for such a long time now, but I have been insanely busy. I briefly wanted to talk about my Hurricane Sandy experience. I still live in the dorms, so I was quite safe. In fact, I live in the "safest" dorm....meaning we have the largest generator. But it is located in the East Village, which we now know was part of the "SoPo" district (South of Power).
I honestly was not even aware there was going to be a hurricane until a few days before. To put it lightly, I was no where as prepared as I was last year for Irene (when I actually bought food and bread). This year, really all I could do was buy six 1.5 L bottles of water. I did have two flashlights, which proved to be very, very handy. Our power went out around 8:30 pm Monday night, and it was already dark by then. The hallways did have power (thanks to the generators!) but we only knew that the generator would last at least 90 minutes. No one knew if the water was still running, when the lights in the hallway would go out, if we could get into our rooms (our dorm uses key cards instead of actual keys) etc. Thankfully, the generator lasted one week. Hot water only lasted about 12 hours, but some did not even have running water.
I only stayed about 24 hours after the power went out, so until Tuesday night. I had not anticipated leaving, but I ended up staying in midtown with my friend Ben until Friday night. The first 24 hours felt like forever. Because there was no wifi, and the position of my room in relation to the building (I face an inner courtyard) I had absolutely no cell service. So I had no idea what was going on. I later found out something actually did happen with Verizon, but either way I was literally in the dark. The one advantage of my room is that it is directly across from the only window in the entire hallway. So I had first dibs on the bench, and the first night I literally laid there (pillow and everything) for hours just reading because there was nothing else to do. On Tuesday, the weather had pretty much calmed down, so my suitemates and I walked to KTown for a much needed meal. After dinner it was decided that the three of us (my roommate had already gone home for the weekend and just stayed home once school was cancelled) were going to leave. I'll be honest, I was not happy with the circumstances that surrounded this decision (which I felt I had no say in), but it ended up being for the best.
The rest of the week flew by because I channeled most of my energy and efforts into work and not really thinking about anything else. Late Friday night, I got the email that the power had been restored. I gathered up all my belongings (all three bags worth....) and hopped on a downtown bus.
The following Wednesday, we got hit by a Nor'easter (my first) which is like a freak snow storm. I pretty much stayed inside all day and caught up with the tv I missed from the week before.
And apparently I am out of storage space (?) for photos, so photos are currently a work in progress. But I have lots!

First week of senior year

One (almost two!) weeks done, only I don't know how many left until graduation. I can't believe that it's already my last year of college. Ever since I came back from abroad, time has gone by so fast. Seriously, junior year went by so fast. I feel like I say this a lot, but this year I actually want to do all the things I've never had time to do. Not sure how I'll fit that in with school, internship and work, but I always seem to manage.
This past week was fashion week, so looking at the collections kept me pretty engaged every night. Check out my fashion week post for a round up of all my favorite collections and looks. One of the biggest trends I'm excited about is colored hair extensions! I tried coloring my hair (somewhat unsuccessfully) over the summer, and seeing all the collections might be the push I need to actually commit and bleach my hair......but baby steps for now.
Besides fashion, my week was filled with my usual. Food, new friends, new classes, new notebooks, etc. My suitemates and I went to Social Eatz to celebrate senior year. Everything was amazing. I got the asian market salad and ribs appetizer. But the fried chicken (which my suitemate got) was outstanding. Next time I go, I am definitely getting the fried chicken. The drinks were fruity....but super strong. ick.

the lychee mix in is amazing. Kelvin needs to have it more often

my week in (free) food!

This week was quite busy. I had two presentations (including one for ~Stern) and a midterm. ick. The week started off on Sunday with a group meeting for my EMI presentation. To make things more cheery, I wore my macaroon t-shirt! Of course it was cold, so I had to cover up the macaroons with a sweater.
Tuesday morning, I had an interview for next semester's internship. gah. I hate interviews. I'm not entirely sure how this one went, but I hope I get it! It was pretty cold, so I wore one of the jackets I got made in Shanghai for the first time! I love the shape and the furry collar! I wish I had another one in black!

Tuesday night I had another group meeting at 7:30, so it just made sense to stay on campus and do work until then. I saw on twitter that Artichoke's Macdougal location was doing a 2 for 1 deal for NYU students. So my friend Rose and I went! We both got the crab slices. Yummy!
Thursday I got a free lunch from Rickshaw Dumplings and Kelvin Slush!! Thanks to Mastercard, every Thursday until November 17 the ten best food trucks in the city will have free lunch for #PricelessNY! I hope the locations will rotate every week. This week Rickshaw Dumpling and Kelvin Slush were on University between 13 and 14th st, so I went right when they opened (or were supposed to open) as a study break. I got the Thai Chicken and basil dumplings and the special slush of the day, Arnold Palmer with cherry mix in. I really liked the peanut sauce that went with the dumplings, so much that I ran out with two dumplings left! And it was also my first time trying the Arnold Palmer slush, (I usually get a citrus base with a fruit mix in) and it was so good!

Saturday, it snowed! A record breaking one inch!! I couldn't believe it until I saw the big, fluffy flakes from my window. I certainly did not go outside yesterday...I heard it was miserable.

First week of school!

I had a lovely first week of school! I love the excitement that the fall brings: new school year, new classes, new school supplies (!!!), new friends, the new possibilities are endless! This semester I feel that I am finally taking classes for my major, which is wonderful! I'm taking Advertising and Society, Media History of New York, Photography and the Visual Archive, Entertainment Media Industries and science. I'm a little worried that taking three comm classes might be a bit too much down the road, but I find these subjects so exciting and so enjoyable.
The first two days of school were rainy and gloomy. I chose to go with a darker color palette: all shades of blue ranging from periwinkle to navy and purples. Finally on Thursday, it was nice and sunny, so I brought out a slight nod to summer with a chambray dress, and transitioned it to fall with my favorite military coat.

And then for my internship on Friday, I opted to wear a very summery yellow dress that I wore earlier this summer because there won't be very many more 80+ degree days! (not that I'm complaining)

My friend Jeff found this really funny picture on tumblr of a funny text you can send on iphone. If you send a simple smiley face, the way that iphone (and some other smart phones) format text messages makes it look like a whale!! I'm obsessed with sending whales now!

Fashion week also started this week. Anna's show isn't until Wednesday evening, but I've been keeping close tabs on all the shows in the meantime. I'm a huge fan of the purple at Prabal Gurung! Although once I actually got a good look at the makeup, I was quite confused by the pink fluorescent lips with the black center, so it looks like the mouth is open. I'm also not a huge fan of the slicked back, wet hair seen at several shows, including Prabal Gurung. But of course, Jason Wu is still my ultimate favorite. His looks are so lady like! forever swoon. Putuoshan

Over the weekend, I went to the island of Putuoshan with NYU as part of my Contemporary China class. Putuoshan is one of the four sacred islands in Chinese Buddhism. Putuoshan stands out amongst the four because it is the only one that is an island. In fact, the entire island is considered a national park, so there is an entrance fee to enter the island. Since there are so many temples on the island, the majority of the visitors are visiting for religious reasons. We seemed to be the only visitors there for the cultural aspect.
Putuoshan is only accessible by ferry, so we had to take a two hour bus ride to the harbor, and then a four hour (pretty rocky) ferry ride. Once on the island, the main mode of transportation is walking and buses. The island is 12.5 km squared, so not too big, but big enough that you might not want to walk to all the temples. The temples we visited were the Puji Temple, Fayu Temple and the Huiji Temple, which is located on the mountain and has 1,888 steps to the peak! The climb only took me and my friends about half an hour, and we were going pretty slow. In our free time, we visited the SiTian Cave, another cave, and the Guanyin statue. The Guanyin statue is 33m tall and is situated on Putuoshan's coast, so you see it looming in the distance while you're on the ferry. But there are over 80 monasteries on the island. These three are the biggest, and therefore the most crowded.
I don't know much about Buddhism, but I do know that the Guanyin is a really important bodhisattva that was originally thought to be male, but later discovered to be female. All Buddhist temples are also built on a North-South, East-West axis, much like the city of Beijing. There are only 3,000 inhabitants of Putuoshan, 1,000 of which are Monks. Since monks are vegetarian, the majority of the food on the island is also vegetarian. There is also a lot of good seafood, but not all of my friends were willing to try the fish.
I thought it was a good weekend and it's definitely not something I see in my everyday life. I would certainly recommend going to a Buddhist temple. The architecture and iconography are always exquisite, and some of the incense smells good, but not all of them.

Shanghai, here I come!

Yesterday afternoon, I received the best news I've received in awhile: I am officially studying abroad next semester in Shanghai!!! I am so unbelievably excited to go to Asia for the first time (and hopefully not my last time) and, quite honestly, to get away from everything and everyone in New York. I still haven't read through everything carefully yet, but I have so much to do before the end of this semester: get a new passport, obtain a visa, figure out the housing situation in China and for next year, choose classes and hopefully save up a last bit of money. whew. It's overwhelming just thinking about it, but one of my new friends, GIAN will be in Shanghai with me, so I won't be totally lost next semester!

first week of school blues.

It's only the first week of school, and I'm already having some anxiety for this semester. After the first day of class, I already had 170 pages of reading, one paper, one quiz, 18 pages of Chinese character writing, I have to go to an art exhibit before Wednesday, I have to watch Ghost World for a paper (where we compare the movie to the Bible) also due Wednesday and I have to teach myself 40 Chinese characters for the aforementioned quiz. It's just a lot to digest in one day. However, I am very pleased with my schedule (the timing of classes) and I love my classes! I'm taking an art history class and we go to a museum nearly every week, which I'm quite pleased about. I think I'm just freaking out because this weekend is super busy for me. I'm working a Fashion's Night Out event Thursday and Friday and if I do well, I may possibly get an internship I interviewed for last week, and I'm also working on Saturday and Sunday.
only 9 pages to go!

Summer reflections.

sorry about the lack of posts....My past two weeks have been full of moving by myself to Union Sq, welcome week/ training, UNPACKING, long walks on a steamy night, work every so often and long nights sipping on tea and enjoying asiago cheese with my close friend Dan.
In the beginning of summer, time seemed to pass by so slowly and suddenly it's September 1st and a fresh crop of freshmen have invaded Washington Sq. Even though I'm now a sophomore in college, I'm still having back to school butterflies—I don't know why, but I still do.
I wish I had something more profound to say....but I don't. yet.

Strawberry Festival

Today was NYU's 25th Annual Strawberry Festival. It was basically a block party in the middle of Greenwich Village with everything and anything related to strawberries. First let me say that I LOVE strawberries—they're easily my favorite fruit, and it seems as though they're hard to find in the city. But the strawberries at the Strawberry Festival were SO good! There was even the longest strawberry shortcake—it was a block long!

Goals for 2/15-2/20

Due to Presidents' Day, I only have three days of classes this week. However, that doesn't mean I have less work! Oodles of reading AND writing due in the next week.

This week's goals:
1. Get a good night's rest every night. aka, in bed by 12 (at the latest) so I can wake up for my 8am!
2. Try not to fall asleep in anime.
3. Do ALL readings for ALL classes. No skimming allowed.
4. Try to actively participate in both anime and history of comm recitations.
5. Continue fisheye experimentation!

Snow day fun!

Valentine’s assembly line, featuring Lena, Linley and Eric Ding.
At precisely 12:17pm, New York University declared today a SNOW DAY. Therefore, Lena and my natural instinct was to spend the afternoon (4 hours) making VALENTINE'S.
